There have been 7,978 confirmed flu cases in Arizona so far this flu season, officials said. Large numbers of patients have flocked to hospitals across metro Phoenix this week, leading to long emergency-room wait times, the agency said in a statement Friday. Flu patients with chronic medical conditions such as heart or lung disease may need emergency care because they face a higher risk of medical complications. "It is challenging, because there are conditions that the flu can make worse," said Dan Quan, an emergency-medicine physician at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. "They have the flu, and it causes other problems." Those with a higher risk of complications include children younger than 5, adults 65 and older and pregnant women. Others at risk of medical complications include the obese, children on long-term aspirin therapy and residents of nursing homes and assisted-living centers. Those who experience severe symptoms such as breathing troubles, chest pain, confusion, dizziness, vomiting or the inability to drink fluids also may need emergency care, according to Dr. Cara Christ, ADHS director. "If you have symptoms and are in a high risk group, or if you feel very sick or worried about your illness, talk to your medical provider,” Christ said in a statement. However, Christ added that people who have mild symptoms may be able to recover at home and avoid the potential spread of the flu to others. This flu season is earlier and much more severe than past years. The 7,978 confirmed cases statewide is the most state health officials have ever recorded this early in the flu season, according to ADHS. There have been 13 flu-related deaths among children nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One child has died in Maricopa County, according to ADHS. Pennsylvania gives approval to first medical marijuana dispensary Pennsylvania gives approval to first medical marijuana dispensary Pennsylvania officials on Thursday announced the first all-clear for a medical marijuana dispensary in the state to begin providing the drug once it becomes available from a licensed grower. The Keystone Canna Remedies dispensary in Bethlehem received the state authorization, a major milestone in Pennsylvania’s new medical marijuana program . “It means there’s going to be safe and effective access to a new medicine that can help (patients) in a wide variety of ways,” said Victor Guadagnino, the company’s co-founder and chief of business development. He said the company sees the drug as a way patients can take a more active role in their own health care. Nine entities have been approved to grow and process medical marijuana, and their products are expected to be available to patients in the coming four months. Gov. Tom Wolf said the approval is good news for patients and their caregivers. “We are one step closer to providing medical marijuana to patients with serious medical conditions who desperately need this medication,” the Democratic governor said. Guadagnino, who lives in New York City, said the dispensary in Bethlehem will open this month for educational workshops and registration assistance, but he does not expect to have the product available until mid-February. The Bethlehem dispensary, which Guadagnino said is part of their multimillion-dollar medical marijuana investment in the region, will start with four or five employees and grow based on patient demand. The company also plans to eventually open two other dispensaries in the Lehigh Valley. Acting Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said officials expect more dispensaries to open in the coming weeks. The announcement of the first dispensary came as the U.S. Justice Department said federal prosecutors are being given more latitude to pursue criminal charges involving marijuana. In response, Wolf vowed to do whatever he can “to protect Pennsylvania patients.” A 2016 state law legalized medical marijuana for people suffering from one of 17 qualifying conditions, including AIDS, autism, cancer, epilepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and Crohn’s disease. More than 10,000 people have signed up. Among them, about 1,200 patients already have been certified by physicians to use medical marijuana. About 570 doctors are being trained or have completed training to be allowed to certify patients. HOW ALCOHOL DAMAGES STEM CELL DNA AND INCREASES CANCER RISK How alcohol damages stem cell dna and increases cancer risk Drinking alcohol produces a harmful chemical in the body which can lead to permanent genetic damage in the DNA of stem cells, increasing the risk of cancer developing, according to research. Working with mice in a laboratory, British scientists used chromosome analysis and DNA sequencing to examine the genetic damage caused by acetaldehyde, a harmful chemical produced when the body processes alcohol. Their findings offered more detail about how alcohol increases the risk of developing 7 types of cancer, including common forms such as breast and bowel cancer. It also showed how the body seeks to defend against the damage alcohol can do. Some cancers develop due to DNA damage in stem cells. While some damage occurs by chance, our findings suggest that drinking alcohol can increase the risk of this damage,” said Ketan Patel, a professor at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, who co-led the study. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, citing “convincing evidence” it causes cancer in humans. A study published in 2011 found that alcohol is responsible for around 4 percent of all cancer in Britain - equating to around 12,800 cases a year. In Wednesday’s study, published in the journal Nature, Patel’s team gave diluted alcohol to mice and then analyzed the effect on the animals’ DNA. They found that acetaldehyde can break and damage DNA within blood stem cells, permanently altering the DNA sequences within these cells. This is important, Patel said, because when healthy stem cells become faulty, they can give rise to cancerous cells. The researchers also looked at how the body tries to protect itself against damage caused by alcohol. The first line of defense is a group of enzymes called aldehyde dehydrogenases or ALDHs, Patel explained. These break down the acetaldehyde into acetate, which cells can then use as a source of energy. In the study, when mice lacking a critical ALDH enzyme were given alcohol, their DNA suffered four times as damage compared with mice with a properly functioning version of the enzyme. Patel said cells also have a second line of defense in the form of a range of DNA repair systems which, most of the time, allow them to fix and reverse different types of DNA damage. But in some instances and in some people - particularly people from South East Asia - the repair systems fail to work, meaning their cells are unable to repair effectively. “It’s important to remember that alcohol clearance and DNA repair systems are not perfect, and alcohol can still cause cancer in different ways - even in people whose defense mechanisms are intact,” Patel said.
